Models have the power and set the rules, not the clients
Third delivery of “The Camgirls’ Confessions”
“The Camgirls’ Confessions”, an excellent article presented by Carlos Sánchez Rangel, a Mexican journalist who, without signs of being prude, tells the stories of various characters of the Colombian webcam industry in the prestigious magazine: “Don Juan”.
“We do not do what men want. They do what we want. If I tell them that I need $1000 and they send it, who’s giving the instructions? If I want to show my tits, but I tell him they have to send me $50, and they do, who’s giving the instructions? I have control”, says Dani Picas. “This is about girls taking control saying: This is what we offer and these are our prices. Ironically, they think they are in control”. When Brenda is confronted with the male “machismo” idea that she is a woman who obeys a man’s orders for money, she frowns: “If you’re a journalist and your boss -who is a man- asks you to write an article and you do it, you’re not conceding anything. It’s a job you’re getting paid to do and that’s all”.
But it wasn’t that easy for all of us to gain control. “At the beginning it used to happen that if the men ordered me to do the “doggy style”, I would. If he asked me to do something, I would do it. But there’s a certain point where you say: Enough, no more. You’re going to do what I say. Experience teaches that you need to have limits, and it’s in that moment when you learn that it’s not all about money, say Flora. In general, models agree that men they meet on the internet are different. They care more about the girls, they talk. On the other hand, men they know in real life try to take them to their rooms after the first date under the wrong promise: “If she gets naked on webcam, then I bet she’s easy”. The majority have stories about this. “Men are a little stupid”, says Flora, but Stephanie Mwarnert, who at 21 years old is one of the most famous webcam models in Colombia, is more direct: “They have their heads in their penises”.
“I met a Dutchman a while ago. He was a very interesting man. He knew five languages, but he was very solitary, he worked all day long. He would come into my room to chat and he would tell me about his day. Thanks to him I speak English and a bit of Italian and Dutch. One day he stopped visiting. After a while, he appeared again. I asked him about his absence and he told me he was the Dutchman’s son”, said Tamara Wonder, a 34–year–old woman with two children and camgirl for three years. Surprised, Tamara asked him what he was doing with his dad’s account. The man explained that his father had died and he had seen that her name, Tamara, was on his favorites and he learned that they used to chat almost daily. Then he said: “I want to thank you because you kept my dadcompany during the time I left him alone. I know he would’ve wanted you to know that he died. Several months has passed since then and Tamara still amazed with this experience.

It is true that many men get to those websites attracted by the sexual side but it’s not that necessarily what keeps them in there. “You can be a pretty girl with a nice body but if you do not make friends and if you don’t let them know you, after a few months you won’t make a penny. You were a pair of tits and people got tired of watching them, says Stefa Daniels, who lives in Medellin. Flora Bella thinks there’s a general conception that the camgirls are cute and dumb, only good enough to get naked, but that’s another misconception. The daily contact with people around the world gives those girls a very wide view of general culture. What is the capital of Australia? She was suddenly asked. Her immediate answer was: “Canberra”. There’s another point that can’t be denied: All of these girls came to this work attracted by the money. None of them stayed for that reason. Camila, for example, didn’t like the job. She quit after one year. But many models end up loving it. “I love to be online and know I have the control over 600 people. I enjoy the fantasies that I have with men on camera”, says Flora. “What I do satisfies me a lot. From touching myself to talking to people for fun. I’m happy when I’m in front of the webcam”, says Sofia Kitty, from Manizales.
